About This Website
When I first started this website in September of 2007, I thought it was about leading by example. To a point, I suppose that's true; it's easier to motivate people by showing them success than by warning of failure. It turns out it's not really that simple.
Originally I came here purely to motivate others by recounting my own successes. While that seems arrogant, and it certainly is to an arguable degree, the site itself served a purpose that I didn't truly understand until it had been offline for over a year: accountability.
Accountability Is Important
By committing myself to talk about things I've done, I was making myself accountable for my own actions. Anyone paying attention to this site knew whether I was accomplishing things, because there would be an update here. By putting myself out in the open like that, I made myself vulnerable. How can that be a good thing?
By making myself vulnerable, this site necessarily drives me to do more. More than I was doing without the site, and more than I may be inspired to do if people weren't paying attention. More than that, the site itself is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
By giving me a way to be accountable for everything I do, the site is itself a demonstration of how important it is to be accountable for your words and actions. Not only do I believe that everyone should be accountable, I'm actually forcing it upon myself.
That is why I will keep my fitness goals from the past and present on this site. That is why I have removed some pages that do not serve the real purpose of this website. And that is why it is vitally important that this website always be here. I am leading by example, making myself accountable to everybody purely because it's important. And that's more than enough reason to do anything.
